What is a PLC?
A programmable logic controller: a rugged industrial computer that controls machinery and processes directly, built for reliability and easy fault-finding.
A PLC, or programmable logic controller, is an industrial computer that has been ruggedized for controlling machinery and processes: assembly lines, pumps, valves, robotic equipment, anything that needs very reliable control.
PLCs are designed to be easy to program and to make faults easy to diagnose. In a SCADA system, the PLCs do the hands-on control at each piece of equipment while the SCADA software supervises them all. See What is SCADA?
